Principal’s Message

Welcome to Dr. Rodney D. Cathey Middle School, a Texas Honor Roll School and home of the Mighty Cobras.  At Cathey, our highly qualified and dedicated staff is committed to excellence by honoring the life and legacy of our namesake.

Dr. Cathey rose from humble beginnings to become the Superintendent of Schools in McAllen ISD from 1969-83. As Superintendent, he advocated for extra funding from the state for the unique needs of Rio Grande Valley schools.

Our task here at Cathey is to provide a foundation of excellence whereby all students will have an equal opportunity to obtain a quality education. We want to empower them to fulfill their hopes and dreams.

Since the school opened in 2000, Cathey has received numerous honors and awards. This includes the prestigious Texas Honor Roll distinguished recognition. That means your child is attending one of the elite middle schools in the state.

These recognitions are the result of hard work by our students, a caring and dedicated professional staff and a supportive and active school community. This community includes our PTO (Parent Teacher Organization), Athletic Boosters and business-community members known as Partners in Excellence.

I am extremely proud of our students and can say with confidence that our great country is in good hands with the creative mindset of our future leaders, your children and our students.

In addition to our success in academics, we also focus on the social and emotional needs of our students through our STEAM-Plus (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) learning framework. The “Plus” refers to an emphasis on a child’s emotional intelligence. Each month, we celebrate students that consistently demonstrate ethical, respectful and compassionate characteristics and behavior.

I encourage you to visit the school regularly and explore our Cathey website for more information regarding our school programs, extracurricular opportunities, school-wide events and activities occurring here at school or across the district. I also ask that you stay involved in your child’s education and encourage you to join our PTO.

Thank you.
