Tips to prevent the spread of germs

  1. Cover your nose and mouth with tissue when you cough or sneeze. Make sure to throw the used tissue into the trash.
  2. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 15-20 seconds, especially after you cough or sneeze.  Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also effective.
  3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth to reduce the spread of germs.
  4. Try to avoid close contact with sick people

A message from our Principal: Dr. J.A. Gonzalez

Dr. Rodney D. Cathey Middle School has done it again !!! Our hard work and dedication has placed us in a very prestigious category. Just for the Kids has selected Cathey Middle School as a 2008 Just for the Kids Higher Performing School in Texas based on our performance in Mathematics. Our school was selected as higher performing based on an analysis conducted by the National Center for Educational Achievement, sponsor of the Just for the Kids Campaign.

Dr. Rodney D. Cathey Middle School earned a highly coveted place on the 2008 Texas Business and Education Coalition (TBEC) Honor Roll. This prestigious award can only be achieved by demonstrating academic excellence in all grades and subjects tested on the TAKS Test for three consecutive years! Dr. Rodney D. Cathey Middle School will be honored at the Texas Business and Education Coalition Banquet at UTPA in recognition of our stellar academic performance. The Banquet will be held on March 25, 2009.

Texas Monthly magazine, in conjunction with The National Center for Educational Accountability, has rated Dr. Rodney D. Cathey Middle School as one of the top performing public schools in the state of Texas for two consecutive years (Texas Monthly December, 2007).

The Performance Analysis System for Colleges of Education, which includes The University of Texas Systems, The Texas A&M University Systems, The University of Houston Systems, and The Texas State University Systems, has rated Dr. Rodney D. Cathey Middle School as a top performing school in Texas based on stellar performance on our state assessment (TAKS).

Cathey Middle School was selected as an Oprah Winfrey O Ambassador School based on our exceptional community service on a local, state, national and global level.

Dr. Rodney D. Cathey Middle School is currently an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program Candidate School. Over the last two years we've been working hard to implement the IB philosophy, requirements and guidelines into our system. On November 13 and 14 of this year we had our final authorization visit. The IB authorization team, sent from the IB North America Office in New York, was extremely impressed with Cathey Middle School. Therefore, I'm confident that Cathey Middle School will be recognized as a fully authorized IB Middle Years Program World School in the near future.

The Texas Education Agency Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) is currently available on-line. This document is our schools “report card.” Based on our AEIS, Cathey Middle School is a solid Recognized Campus. We earned the following Gold Performance Acknowledgements: Commended in Reading/ELA, Commended in Writing, Commended in Mathematics, Comparable Improvement in Mathematics and Commended in Social Studies. These results are phenomenal and are a result of a lot of hard work by all stakeholders.

I'd like to extend my most sincere appreciation to Dr. Rodney D. Cathey Middle School parents, teachers, support staff and most importantly, our student body for your dedication to our school. It takes a team effort to accomplish great things. We are an exceptional team! Together, we are building a tradition and legacy that is second to none!

Sincerely,

Dr. J.A. Gonzalez, Principal
